The short version

Why this work usually gets commissioned.

Google Sheets fails differently to Excel. The problems are rarely computational — they are collaborative. Someone inserts a row and breaks a formula range. Thirty people have edit access to the tab that holds the revenue number. A volatile function turns a fast file into a slow one. Fixing this is part restructuring and part deciding who is allowed to change what.

Scope

Google Sheets and Apps Script automation: what is included.

Every engagement gets an hours estimate before it starts. If something below is not relevant to you, it comes out of the scope and off the estimate.

01

Access and structure design

Separating the data layer from the reporting layer, with protection so the calculation cannot be broken by a well-meaning row insertion.

02

Apps Script automation

Scheduled imports, email reports, form handling and integrations, written to be maintained rather than to impress.

03

Performance rescue

Diagnosing and fixing the volatile functions and whole-column references that make a Sheet slow.

04

Sheets dashboards

Reporting built for a team that lives in the browser and will not open a separate BI tool.

Why shared Sheets break. Not formulas — access. When thirty people can edit the tab that calculates, someone eventually inserts a row. Separating the layers is most of the fix.

Same work, different job titles

What people call this work.

These all describe the same engagement. The title matters less than whether the person writes things down — but it is worth knowing which term to search, because the results differ.

Google Sheets expert

The general term, covering formulas, structure and the collaboration problems that are specific to Sheets.

Apps Script developer

The automation side. Apps Script is to Sheets what VBA is to Excel, and the same questions about error handling apply.

Google Sheets consultant or specialist

Used where the problem is how a shared file is organised and governed rather than what a formula does.

Spreadsheet automation expert

Where the work spans Sheets, Forms, Gmail and Drive as one connected process rather than a single file.

Method

How we run it.

  1. 01

    Map who edits what

The access pattern usually explains the breakage pattern.

  2. 02

    Separate data from presentation

Two layers, different permissions. This one change prevents most recurring breakage.

  3. 03

    Rebuild the formula layer

Structured ranges and named references that survive rows being added.

  4. 04

    Set the rules

Who owns which sheet, and what the process is for changing structure.

Where the hours actually go. Typical proportions across an engagement. Discovery and testing are a third of the work — that is deliberate, and it is why the files still run a year later.

Questions

Google Sheets, answered.

What clients ask before commissioning this work.

Ask us something else
Sheets or Excel — which should we use?

Sheets when collaboration and access-from-anywhere matter most. Excel when you need computational depth, large datasets or offline work. Many teams sensibly run both, with Sheets for collection and Excel for modelling.

Our Sheet has become very slow. Can it be fixed?

Usually. The causes are predictable: volatile functions recalculating constantly, whole-column references, and array formulas over far more rows than needed. A restructure typically resolves it. If the dataset is genuinely too large, we will tell you it needs to move to BigQuery rather than optimising indefinitely.

Can you connect Sheets to other systems?

Yes, via Apps Script or the available connectors. We build for the failure case — what happens when the source is unavailable — because scheduled imports fail eventually and silent failure is the expensive kind.

Can you migrate an Excel file to Sheets, or the other way?

Yes, though a direct conversion rarely works well for a complex file. The formula behaviour and performance characteristics differ enough that a rebuild against the same requirements usually produces a better result.
