The short version

Why this work usually gets commissioned.

A financial model has two audiences: the person who builds it and the person who has to believe it. Most models are built well for the first and poorly for the second. The difference is structural — assumptions in one place, no constants buried in formulas, checks that prove the thing ties, and a calculation path a reviewer can follow without a guided tour.

Model outputs a reviewer can verify without calling you — which is the difference between a model that gets signed off and one that gets questioned.

Scope

Financial modelling and forecast builds: what is included.

Every engagement gets an hours estimate before it starts. If something below is not relevant to you, it comes out of the scope and off the estimate.

01

Forecast and budget models

Driver-based, with the assumptions visible and separated from the calculation.

02

Scenario and sensitivity analysis

Change one input, see the effect across outputs, compare cases side by side.

03

Model review

An independent check before you rely on a model for a bid, a raise or a board decision.

04

Investor and board metrics

Reproducible calculations with written definitions, so the number means the same thing next quarter.

Same work, different job titles

What people call this work.

These all describe the same engagement. The title matters less than whether the person writes things down — but it is worth knowing which term to search, because the results differ.

Financial modeller

Builds the model. The useful question is whether they build for the reviewer as well as themselves.

Excel financial analyst

Used where the work includes interpreting the output, not only constructing the calculation.

Financial modelling consultant

Typically engaged to review or rebuild an existing model before it goes to a board, lender or investor.

FP&A modelling support

In-house finance framing — budgets, forecasts and variance packs rather than transaction models.

Method

How we run it.

  1. 01

    Agree the drivers

What actually moves the outputs. Models fail more often from wrong structure than wrong arithmetic.

  2. 02

    Build the assumption layer

One controlled place, with an owner and an effective date on each input.

  3. 03

    Add the checks

Balance checks, sanity flags and reconciliations that fail loudly and visibly.

  4. 04

    Document

The calculation path, the update procedure, and the assumptions someone needs to challenge.

Where the hours actually go. Typical proportions across an engagement. Discovery and testing are a third of the work — that is deliberate, and it is why the files still run a year later.

Questions

Financial models, answered.

What clients ask before commissioning this work.

Ask us something else
Do you follow a modelling standard?

We follow the principles common to FAST and SMART — consistent row logic, no constants inside formulas, clear separation of inputs, calculations and outputs. If you require strict adherence to a named standard, say so at the start and we will build to it.

Can you review a model we already have?

Yes, and for a lot of clients this is the more useful engagement. You get a prioritised findings list and a recorded walkthrough, and you can decide whether to fix it yourselves.

Are you accountants or financial advisers?

No. We build the model mechanics. The financial assumptions, accounting treatment and any advice on what the numbers mean must come from you or your advisers — we do not provide financial or accounting advice.

Can you model for a specific industry?

We have built for SaaS, real estate, manufacturing, construction and project-based businesses. Where the domain assumptions need specialist knowledge, we build the structure and your team supplies the assumptions.

Often combined with

Related services.

Most engagements touch more than one of these. We scope them together rather than selling them separately.
