FINANCIAL MODELLING
Rebuilding a model only one person could run
Key-person risk in a spreadsheet is an operational exposure. Here is how the rebuild usually goes.

How it goes
The sequence.
- 01
Inventory before you touch anything
Every hard-coded number inside a formula, every external link, every manual step in the update procedure. This inventory is often the most valuable deliverable on its own — several clients have stopped there, having finally seen what the file actually does.
- 02
Interview the author
The model contains years of undocumented business logic. Rebuilding without extracting it first destroys knowledge. The questions that matter: why is this adjustment here, what does this constant represent, and what breaks if it changes?
- 03
Isolate the assumptions
Every input moves to one controlled tab with an owner and an effective date. Constants come out of formulas entirely. This single change is what makes the model reviewable by someone who did not build it.
- 04
Add checks that fail loudly
Balance checks, sanity flags and reconciliations that are visible at the top of the file. A model that quietly produces a wrong number is more dangerous than one that stops.
- 05
Write the procedure into the file
A one-page update note lives in the workbook, not in someone's inbox. The test of success is simple: can a second person run the close without a phone call?
